FACEBOOK Picture-Mania.
By Kirsten Okenwa
I walked into a photo studio the other day for a quick passport. Sitting in the corner chair were two teenage girls arguing over a set of digital pictures they had just taken. "It's not as good as that one we snapped in April," one of the girls said. The other replied that her false lashes were not well captured. The argument and complaints continued till the second photographer arranged a sofa-set for more pictures. I voiced my amazement at the girls' obsession with their faces and pictures. "It's for Facebook," I was told.
Are you familiar with this scenario? That time consuming effort put into finding the perfect picture for a Facebook page. It's good to show nice pictures of ourselves, but, when it becomes an obsession and a thing of competition, it's time to take a check and ask, "Is it really worth it?"
An American college student Jenna Sanford wrote, "Some young women are now so focused on their pictures on Facebook, they’re even having plastic surgery to improve their image. They’re also spending so much effort capturing pictures of their life that some sociologists say they’re not living it. At least one therapist has said this is causing serious issues with self-esteem and body image. The focus is no longer on just going out and having fun, but on getting the pictures to prove it."
